Warning To Employer Over Employee Safety From Germs

Monday, 26. July 2010

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago the dangers lurking in cars that could make drivers and passengers very ill. The point has now been re-iterated at a recent ACFO conference whereby the danger of catching Legionnaires disease, as a result of stagnant water in windscreen washer bottles, was mentioned but from the point of view of employer liability. According to the report creators, the Health Protection Agency, who raised the danger of Legionnaires disease being rife in warm stagnant water, washer bottles that contained plain water are highly likely to contain the bacteria but non was found in screen wash bottles that contained screen-wash detergent. They therefore recommended that all drivers add some screen wash to their screen wash bottles and employers in particular should instruct all drivers to do this in order to fulfil their obligations to employee health and safety. What do you think, are we taking away a responsibility from the driver who should shoulder all the blame for vehicle maintenance? By Graham Hill
