As fuel prices continue to rise the Government is under continual pressure to shelve the fuel duty hike. In April the duty will rise from its current 59pence per litre by inflation plus 1p, estimated at 3 to 4 pence per litre. Diesel is already at an all time high and still rising without the duty hike, causing the AA, RAC, Auto Express, RMIF and others to call on the Government to put the brakes on. Insurance and fuel duty increases have been blamed for the inflation busting increase of 6.3% announced by the RAC in their Cost of Motoring Index. The average cost has increased by £346 over last year’s cost taking it up to £6,000. Depreciation has also had an effect although some costs such as Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) and car finance have dropped. Even without the full increase in fuel duty we are seeing a constant increase in fuel cost. Petrol rose by 23% (21 pence per litre) last year whilst diesel increased by 13% (13 pence per litre) and we have already seen fuel increase by about 8 pence per litre this year. Experts are warning that the hike in fuel duty taking place this week by 2.3 pence per litre could be the start of significant increases on the way as crude oil increases in cost and the reduced rate VAT is set to end. The RAC predict that pump prices could return to the levels of summer 2008 at around £1.20 litre.
