Graham Hill, Car Finance Expert Explains How Drivers Can Save Fuel

Friday, 2. April 2010

Even without the full increase in fuel duty we are seeing a constant increase in fuel cost. Petrol rose by 23% (21 pence per litre) last year whilst diesel increased by 13% (13 pence per litre) and we have already seen fuel increase by about 8 pence per litre this year. On average petrol increased every 2 weeks and as the increase was spread over the year it hasn’t led to serious discontent. But with fuel set to rise further this year some are calling for greater use of speed limiters. Whilst the call is mainly for commercial vehicle and business car drivers the same applies to all drivers with  complaints that many cars are fitted with limiters but they are never used (I’m one of them – oops). It is generally felt that you can save around 10% of your fuel by driving at 60mph instead of 70mph. In fact one Borough Council, Kings Lynne, has set the limiters on their vehicles to 56mph and have seen a 25% saving from when it was set at 70mph. So when not in a hurry drop your speed and enjoy the surroundings a little more whilst saving some money. By Graham Hill
