If someone does a particular job for a living and you need some advice related to the work he or she does would it not be a good idea to ask them for advice? For example if you weren’t sure how to record expenses in your books would you ask an accountant? Changing some taps in the bathroom, it might be a good idea to get some advice from a Read more »

A constant problem when customers take out a lease agreement is insurance. You have to cover your car with fully comprehensive insurance. If other drivers will drive the vehicle they must also be covered by the policy and if the vehicle is used for business this must be covered also. The problem is where to go. I still find it amazing that I have Read more »

Many of you know of the so called money saving expert, Martin Lewis who has clearly saved many people lots of money on credit card overcharges and bank charges. I never deny that, but he has also been the source of miss-information. Take his personal criticism of Carol Vorderman when she advertised consolidation loans on TV and Read more »

A few weeks ago I had a bet with an old friend of mine over one of the critical sectors that I believed had been omitted from the new EU Consumer Credit Directive (CCD) which came fully into force from 1st February. The question was over Hire Purchase. I knew that the sister product, known as Conditional Sale, was included but it was my understanding that Hire Purchase was excluded and was therefore simply controlled, as it always has been, by our existing Consumer Credit Act. After years of warnings in my newsletter and on my blog the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) has acknowledged that there are crooks offering leasing online who con consumers and small businesses out of money. I have had countless letters and emails over the years from those that have leased vehicles saying that they have lost money by trusting online leasing providers who had great web sites and extremely friendly and helpful phone support. They certainly Read more »

A new code of conduct is set to be launched this month by the Retail Motor Industry Federation, the association responsible for dealers and workshops. The scheme is set up to promote best practice and help to maintain standards for motorists, covering servicing and repairs. However, not everyone is impressed as there are already others operating similar controls, such as the AA, who argue that there are already too many in operation. AA technical specialist Vanessa Guyll said, ‘Multiple codes Read more »

We all know the expression ‘A little knowledge is a bad thing,’ and it couldn’t be more true at the moment in the area of car leasing. As small businesses and consumers look for ways to reduce their costs, car leasing is being discussed more and more, then armed with sketchy information many are embarking upon leasing without knowing exactly what they are getting into. This isn’t being helped by confusing and conflicting advertising on the Internet as well as some very strange promotions Read more »

The economy is fragile and uncertain which means there is greater demand for short term leases, as businesses and consumers look to restrict their commitments. Unfortunately, the fact that the manufacturers have scaled back production considerably, means that there is no overstock of vehicles available. This oversupply would normally encourage the manufacturers to provide additional bonuses, making short term leases relatively cheap, as this bonus helps to offset the heaviest Read more »

The motor finance industry was to see a potential new broker association being formed that would concentrate on providing benefits to consumers and small business operating predominantly in the retail sector. The NACFB (National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers) offered their support to any such initiative but when this came to my notice, as an ex director and president of the association, I saw a huge potential for the association and immediately got to work with the chief Read more »
