April saw an increase in the sale of premium cars such as BMW and Audi. Whilst new car sales suffered during the month the premium brands all saw growth. The companies that showed growth included Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, BMW and Saab. Jaguar was the only make to suffer with sales down 60%. BMW even got into the top 10 car sales with its 3 Series, accounting for nearly half of the 6,886 cars sold by BMW during the month. Audi was top of the premium car pops with sales of 8,693. The new car market slumped by 8.5% in the first 4 months of 2011. Some of the successful manufacturers during the scrappage scheme are now suffering from dropped sales compared with the first quarter of last year.

Sales to businesses far outweighed sales to consumers with the corporate buyers accounting for 60% of all new car sales. Diesel sales rose by 7% to take 53% of the market. The feeling is that the industry will return to growth in the second half of this year. Hopefully it will tempt manufacturers to give away more money to stimulate demand! By Graham Hill
