New DVLA Notification Rules About Medical Conditions

Monday, 18. August 2008

Few people are aware of their obligations if they have medical problems. Gavin Jones, risk management expert at Masterlease pointed out ‘All drivers are required by law to notify the DVLA of any medical condition which may affect their fitness do drive but many drivers are failing to report this and could be using the road illegally.’ He added ‘When the DVLA is notified of any medical issues, a full investigation is carried out before the motorist is deemed fit to continue with their licence.’ If this is the case and drivers are driving whilst suffering a medical condition that would make them unfit to drive they would be driving illegally and could invalidate their insurance. Other circumstances that could result in the DVLA revoking a driving licence includes new drivers that accumulate 6 points within the first 2 years of driving. The new Drivers Act states that a new driver must serve a probationary period of 2 years after passing their test. Motorists that accumulate 6 or more points during this period will automatically have their licences revoked by the DVLA. Many new drivers, especially young drivers are not aware of this probationary period so do not surrender their licences when they pick up 6 points and continue to drive. This means they are driving illegally and would invalidate their insurance whilst potentially putting lives at risk. If you like contradiction you will be delighted with this. A new study has found that if drivers use their voice to select music, input addresses in the sat nav and dial a phone number while driving they are significantly less distracted and drive better. So there you have it! By Graham Hill
