Call To Reduce The Number Of Traffic Lights

Today’s amazing fact is that there are over 25,000 traffic lights across the country with 6,000 in London alone. The number increased by 30% between 2000 and 2008. The figures were collated by the RAC Foundation who also pointed out that the number of lights that were programmed to give priority to busses rose by 221% in just 2 years from 3,801 at the beginning of 2007 to 8425 at the end of 2008. They have also provided the Department for Transport with suggestions that they trial flashing amber lights during off peak times and a reduction of Green Man phases to 6 seconds down from 10 seconds along with a countdown to let pedestrians know how long they have left to cross the road. The Coalition committed to reduce the number of unnecessary lights but have yet to implement. By Graham Hill
