Car Servicing Allowed At Non Franchised Dealers

If you’re an avid reader of my newsletter and blog you will have read that you no longer need to have your car serviced by a main dealer in order to maintain your warranty. The rules that were relaxed several years ago that prevented you from having your car serviced wherever you wanted are known as the EU Block Exemption Rules. These rules have just been reviewed again and the rules pretty much left as they were. You can still have your car serviced and maintained at non main dealers and whilst I have always recommended that manufacturer’s original parts still be used the new rules have made it clear that non authorised spares can be used if you so wish. Independent garages have the power to insist upon receiving technical information from the manufacturers. By 2013 the rules promoting multi brand dealerships will disappear allowing manufacturers to force dealers to sell single brand which we are told will reduce distribution costs. There are other changes regarding legal ownership of lease vehicles that we are told will help leasing companies and could bring down costs, so all in all good news.
