Potholes Continue To Get Worse As Authorities Leave Them

Tuesday, 26. January 2010

Following the bad weather there have been reports from all over the country that pot holes, some the size of a small cave, have opened up on not just minor and B roads but also on A roads. Even some motorways have some nasty craters on them as I experienced a few evenings ago on the M25. This is clearly the result of budget cuts and either Bodgit and co – road workers carrying out the work or those gentle folk that Read more »

Motorway Hard Shoulder Running Scheme Extended

Tuesday, 8. December 2009

The pilot hard shoulder running programme that was started on the M42 has now been extended, a month sooner than expected. The new section, open from the 9th December, is on a seven mile stretch of the UK’s busiest motorway, the M6, running between junctions 4 and 5. This stretch of the hard shoulder is opened up to traffic during busy periods and will have the first ‘through junction running’ allowing Read more »

Dangerous Driving Kills Road Workers

Friday, 28. November 2008

Would you like to be a road worker? I know we all complain about the 3 miles of cones before we get to the 10’ stretch of central reservation being repaired by 4 road workers but frankly it’s not a job that I would like to do given the lunatic way that some motorists thrash down the reduced lanes of the motorway or A road. Unsurprisingly 10 road workers were killed and 81 were seriously injured Read more »

Thursday, 6. November 2008

Plans have just been announced to use the hard shoulder on motorways to avoid congestion. The first of the plans was to charge £5 per car to those joining a traffic jam on the motorway by driving along the hard shoulder. Other plans involve the use of hard shoulders on the M3, M4, M5 and M27 as a type of toll lane with sensors mounted on gantries above the motorway to Read more »

This will give Highways officers similar powers to the police. Could this be the thin end of the wedge? By Graham Hill

Major Road Works Ahead

Friday, 26. September 2008

If you live or travel around Birmingham you will have seen that work has begun on the £150 million scheme on the M6, M40 and M42 to introduce variable speed limits and hard-shoulder running. Two new stretches of the M6 will be opened for hard-shoulder running during peak periods and variable speed limits will be in force on parts of the M6, M42 and M40. The work is part of a £6 billion investment aimed at Read more »

Save Money On Fuel On Motorways

Tuesday, 9. September 2008

Yet another suggestion as to how you can reduce your fuel costs – don’t fill up at motorway services unless it’s an emergency, then only put in the bare minimum to get you to where you want to be and find a supermarket forecourt. The average price of motorway fuel is 10 pence per litre more than supermarkets which adds about £5.50 to a tank full of fuel according to Read more »
