This year has been a bit of a struggle for many industry sectors but not so much for the motor industry. Following the scrappage scheme it was expected that the motor industry would contract and dealerships close, something I personally didn’t think would happen. In anticipation of a potential downturn the manufacturers started to scale down production in 2008/9, some would say too far, as virtually every new car drifted out to long delivery lead times as demand remained relatively high. More people are taking cars on lease as it saves money and improves cash flow. They are also wising up to the fact that cars have to be returned in a ‘reasonable’ condition which means any damage should be repaired or you could face some serious refurbishment charges if the leasing company assesses the work when the vehicle is returned. As a result many are turning to the cheapest alternative and that is the Read more »

It would seem that some of the carbon friendly effects of the recession are better management of family vehicles and in many cases a reduction in the number of vehicles being driven by the family. Added to which many employees are opting for cash for cars in place of the old company car scheme, effectively seen as increasing their income, as they now use the family car which they had anyway and was Read more »

My advice when applying for finance is make sure you check your credit file and sort out any errors. If you went through a difficult patch, divorce, redundancy, death in the family etc. and things are fine now make sure that you put that information on your credit file (as explained in my book ‘An Insider Guide To Car Finance’) by entering a Notice of Correction, this also applies if you think that an error has Read more »

Let me give you a scenario. You buy a car for £10,000 which you finance over 3 years either by HP or a personal loan, either way you own the vehicle at the end of the 3 years after paying back the £10,000 along with the interest charges. You then sell the car for its market value. I, on the other hand, decide to buy exactly the same car for £10,000 but finance it using a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP). The man in the dealership has told me that there is a final figure allowed on the car of £4,000 which I can either pay to own it or Read more »

There is growing evidence that SME’s and consumers are moving over to leasing as a way to fund their vehicles. The old reasons still exist, having a fixed, known monthly cost, no risk in uncertain resale values and benefitting from hidden substantial bonuses provided by manufacturers to leasing companies but SME’s and consumers have identified a new benefit. It has been reported this week that many people do not see the distinction between credit crunch and recession. For those that lived through the last recession, as I did, you will know how hard things got before we turned the corner and things started to dramatically improve. And this was all down to a recession, which was pretty much left to run its course by the Government. Whilst it seemed pretty harsh at the time it was a way of streamlining business in the UK and weeding out the good from the bad. Sadly, Read more »

As if to support my comments made over the last few weeks market analyst Datamoniter has recorded a growth in vehicle leasing in the fleet sector as more companies release cash tied up in their vehicles and reduce exposure to market conditions by selling off the cars they own and replace them with leased vehicles. New vehicle sales generally slumped further in August from the July drop of 7.3% to an unprecedented 15.6%. Consumers, unaware of the cash flow benefits of leasing new cars, have really Read more »

Over the years I have often found myself locking horns with accountants over the benefits of leasing. Most accountants fall into one of two categories, they either ‘get it’ totally or are totally clueless. Of course all of my accountant readers ‘get it’ totally. It was highlighted last week once again when I couldn’t get a potential client’s accountant to appreciate that by taking a lease his client would save around Read more »

We are not in a recession – yet! But signs are that we are moving that way so now may be the correct time to consider leasing your car and take advantage of some of the deals that are about at the moment. It’s all about cash flow and contract hire will certainly provide you with the best cash flow and there is some even better news which I’ll talk about in a moment. If we look at the Audi A6 that we have on special at the moment the cost after 3 months payment in advance would be £329 + VAT per month (£387 per month inc VAT) but if you bought the car on HP over 4 years you would be paying close to Read more »
