Have you seen a road sign recently meaning ‘no overtaking’? Did you know that’s what it meant? Apparently 23% of drivers don’t according to a recent survey carried out by Goodyear. Along with many other deficiencies the well known tyre manufacturer surveyed 5,000 motorists and found that there were many instances where drivers were clueless about certain areas of the highway code. For example 54% didn’t know that you must remain stationary when the red and amber lights are showing together when waiting at a set of traffic lights.

48% were unaware of the average stopping distance when travelling at 50mph. Nearly a fifth though you could stop in 36 metres rather than the actual answer of 53 metres.

Maybe we should introduce a driving test along with the eye test? What do you think? By Graham Hill
