We’ve become hands free, clearly we have all become cableist, we don’t like cables but unfortunately we have to get power into all these devices that we like to wander around with. So at sometime we have to connect up our mobile phones to a charging device, either a length of cable or more usual a docking station of some sorts. However in our cars we tend to have a charger that we connect between the now defunct cigarette lighter socket and our phone. To begin with we carefully curl it up and place it out of sight in the glove compartment but after a while that becomes a chore and the cable is left looking like an unloved piece of spaghetti strung across the centre console.

Hill to the rescue with my gadget of the week, a retractable charge lead. Again you simply plug into the lighter socket and plug the other end into your mobile phone setting the length of the cable to whatever you want up to 1 metre.

It also comes with a usb socket so you could charge say your iPod and SatNav at the same time – pretty cool. And when you’ve finished you just press a button and the thin wire retracts, nice neat cabin!

You can buy the unit on offer at the moment on Amazon.co.uk The full retail is a bit steep at £19.99 but if you go quickly to Amazon you could bag a bargain.

The unit is called Kit Retractable In Car Charger, make a neat Christmas Present. By Graham Hill
