Employees Being Discouraged Fom Using Cars For Business

Monday, 9. August 2010

The number of employees using their own cars for business use, known as the grey fleet, has dropped from 42% a year ago to just 28% now. The findings were the result of a survey carried out by Enterprise Rent-A-Car amongst 400 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). No reason was given for this dramatic fall, clearly the increase in unemployment had something to do with it, along with the health and safety rules making it very hard to allow employees to use their cars for work. The rules, punishable on the employer with a prison sentence, insisted upon the carrying out of very stringent tests to ensure that the car and the driver were roadworthy, serviced on time – that’s the car not the driver, current MOT and the driver with a current driving licence and the right insurance cover. Or it could be that the tax free mileage of 40 pence per mile for the first 10,000 business miles isn’t enough to cover the full cost any more. Do you drive your car on company business and do you have to complete forms to say that you and your car are both road legal? By Graham Hill
