Biofuel Can Be Very Dangerous

Sunday, 18. January 2009

On the question of fuel, if you have been convinced that bio fuel is a much better option and your car is still covered by the manufacturers warranty you should check to see if using bio fuel affects your warranty. Unlike the EU it has ruled that each country can set its own levels of biodiesel concentration and that there is no mandatory need to label fuel at the filling stations. It is well known that a concentration of over 7% of FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) can cause mechanical problems and the European Parliament agreed that there should be a maximum of 7% FAME but it has allowed member countries to market biodiesel without constraints which means that countries can sell biodiesel with higher than a 7% concentration. This is not acceptable and potentially costly if you run into difficulties after fuelling the car with biodiesel. We should all consider the green options but this one may be a step too far until the EU introduces constraints. By Graham Hill
