You’ve seen the warning adverts on the TV showing how a rear, unbelted, passenger can smash into the back of a driver and kill him or her in the event of an accident? Well what do you think happens when a 2 stone dog does the same? And yet no attention seems to be given to the dangers of a loony dog running from window to window, either side of the rear seat, sticking its head out and covering passing traffic on one side and pedestrians and cyclists the other side with doggy slobber! You brake hard and either you or your passenger ends up wearing the dog! But fear not Read more »

In times of recession is there any good news? Yes there is. According to the Department for Transport there are fewer cars using the roads resulting in quicker and safer journeys. According to the DfT motorists travelled 3.1 billion less miles last year which has got to be good on so many fronts, fewer accidents, less CO2 in the atmosphere, less wear and tear on our roads, less of our precious fuel used. For those of my readers that find it essential to be dressed in the right colours for the current season I can now reveal the car colour to be seen in to be (drum roll please) Black. Black overtook Silver last year and has retained the honours for this year according to car paint manufacturer, DuPont. However, hot on its heels, along with silver, as the most popular tints is white. The question is how did they arrive at Read more »

If you are still one of those that likes to own a car but is worried by the loss in depreciation – if you are then don’t buy a Maybach 62 which is reported by trade valuers Parkers to have lost £128,899 during 2008. However, downsizing and demand for city cars has kept used prices of smaller cars high producing the lowest cash losses in 2008. You should therefore ditch the Maybach, Bentley or Aston and replace with one of the following: Read more »

Do you ever feel that you are banging your head against a brick wall? How many times did I say before Christmas that some of the deals that are available may never return so take them whilst you can. But no, obviously I was lying or simply trying to pull a few deals in to pay for my extravagant Christmas and New Year celebrations. The truth is that I wasn’t. There was a huge effort on the part of some manufacturers to Read more »

If you like to drive a prestige car and have thought that owning is a much better option consider the Bentley GT Coupe owner whose car is now depreciating at £500 more per week more than it did 12 months ago which means, according to trade newspaper Fleet News that it has depreciated by more than £67,000 in its first year, that’s a staggering 56% off its new price of £120,000. After 3 years travelling average mileage the Mini diesel retains 63.3% of it’s original value although this is down from its high of 71% in 2007. It wasn’t long ago when I advised drivers to check the settings of their head restraints in order to prevent one of the most common driving injuries, whiplash. Well it now turns out that EuroNCAP, the body that checks the safety of every new car, now has a new test that it carries out on seats to check their ability to prevent whiplash. It showed that 8 new cars launched in 2008 failed the new test including some surprises, Ford Kuga, Citroen C5 and Peugeot 308CC. These cars were given a ‘red rating’ which meant Read more »

A Europe-wide road behaviour survey by AXA has revealed 92% of British drivers feel safe driving on roads in their country compared to a European average of 72%. The study involved 800 drivers from 9 countries. I really don’t know why I include this stuff although I should imagine the average was brought down dramatically by the Italians who feel that the horn is as important as the steering wheel and must take their lives in their hands every time they get behind the wheel, oops I mean horn. Besides that as we all know it just isn’t natural driving on the wrong side of the road! By Graham Hill
