New Maritime Rules Could Affect The Cost Of Diesel From 2019

Thursday, 11. October 2018

Fuel management company, TMC has warned of a potential increase in the cost of diesel at the pumps as a result of changes to International rules governing merchant shipping – I know sounds crazy! But new international rules governing the fuel used by merchant ships will force the shippers to use ultra-low sulphur diesel which could result in insufficient worldwide diesel refining capacity that in turn will drive up prices.

TMC has stated that refineries will need to upgrade their plants requiring heavy investment into new equipment but that this will potentially take several years whilst the new regulations come into force in 2019. So a fight is expected between shippers and those providing diesel for road transport use.

Oil prices will potentially rise as well as distilled diesel fuel as smaller, less complex refineries look to stockpile low sulphur light sweet crude oil for their existing processes. So if you are looking to change your car you might like to consider the potential serious rise in the cost of diesel. By Graham Hill
