Most Brits Illegally Drive Abroad

Sunday, 12. September 2010

As more Brits decided to reduce their holiday costs and drive to their European destination this year many were caught out by the different European laws that apply to safety equipment that you must carry or face an on the spot fine. In a survey carried out by Sainsbury’s Finance they found that a third weren’t aware that they needed a reflective jacket, 15% didn’t know about the need for a warning triangle. 2% said Read more »

New Approach To Biofuel Brings It Back Into Focus

Thursday, 9. September 2010

If you are driving behind a car and it seems to be wandering across the road as though the driver had been drinking, it may not be the driver it may just be the car that’s a little worse for wear! Researchers at Edinburgh Napier University have developed a biofuel from whisky by-products. Called biobutanol it’s 30% more powerful than ethanol and is created out of two waste products: ‘pot ale’ from copper stills and Read more »

New EU Consumer Credit Directive Affects New & Used Car Deliveries

Sunday, 5. September 2010

If you are about to finance a car in your own name as opposed to through a business, you will need to allow a little extra time between ordering, signing the finance agreement and collection/delivery of the new car. According to the new EU Consumer Credit Directive all agreements that fall within the terms of our own Consumer Credit Act must be given a 14 day cooling off period. In the past, if you signed the agreement on trade premises, for example at a dealership or the premises of a broker Read more »

Graham Hill’s Gadget Of The Week Keeps You Legal

Wednesday, 1. September 2010

The Graham Hill gadget of the week is a tyre pressure warning system. I’ve reported on many occasions the importance of running tyres at the correct pressure. Not only is it a legal requirement punishable by points and a fine, tyres wear quicker, grip is reduced and fuel consumption can increase by up to 10%. We all know that we should check our tyres daily and at worst fortnightly (as suggested by tyre Read more »

Are The New Extended Manufacturers Warranties What They Seem?

Wednesday, 1. September 2010

The warranty arguments are starting to build – exactly as I predicted. Warranty Direct, one of the largest providers of aftermarket warranty insurance, first of all complained that Kia and Hyundai’s new extended warranty adverts did not make it clear that the warranty had a 100,000 mile ceiling, the same as the widely promoted Vauxhall ‘Lifetime’ warranty. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed Read more »

Beware Of Where You Park, Even If You’re Disabled

Monday, 30. August 2010

As local authorities look at ways to raise money, in order to fill the deepening hole in their finances, it’s the motorists who are about to get another kicking. After this coalition government said they wouldn’t use motorists as a cash cow, as had been seen previously, when things have been tight for local authorities. In the Surrey towns of Epsom and Ewell disabled blue badge holders are now being charged for their Read more »

Where To Avoid A Half Million Pound Speeding Fine

Friday, 27. August 2010

Mercedes SLS AMG

If you have a few quid in the bank and like to break speed limits you would be well advised to avoid Switzerland where a motorist, driving a Mercedes SLS- AMG has been landed with an eye watering fine of £538,000. Yep it’s true, he was finally clocked doing 186 mph on the A12. I say finally as most speed traps that he passed have a limit of 125 miles per hour. The 37 year old was doing more than twice the legal limit. Read more »

Just as all our attention is being given to the new electric car initiative, now backed by the Coalition Government it seems that biofuels may be back on the agenda. For those that are unsure biofuels are a mixture of petrol and sustainable ethanol. The standard was known as E85 which means the mixture is 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. When it was being introduced it was at a time when we had massive grain mountains Read more »

Thursday, 26. August 2010

Do you have a Sat Nav? Does it get you where you want to go by the best route? Apparently not according to a recent survey carried out by Manheim Auctions. Whilst half of all drivers have a sat nav only one in eight of the owners trust them. A third said they managed to get Read more »

Vans Become More Dangerous As Companies Suffer

Saturday, 21. August 2010

Vehicle and Operator Services Agency
Image via Wikipedia

According to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) around half of vans on UK roads fail spot safety checks suggesting that van fleets are wilfully disregarding mechanical defects and ignoring the need for regular maintenance checks. Their findings show that van fleet offences now exceed those of HGV’s and PSV’s. More than half of the 21,000 vans checked last year uncovered mechanical defects compared Read more »
