As Brokers and Dealers Fail Protect Your Car Finance Payments

Saturday, 8. November 2008

The ‘recession/credit crunch’ is already cutting fairly deeply and now is a time to think very carefully about the financing of your next car. Not only should you take care over the type of finance that you use but you should also take care over the supplier. In the last week I have heard of three dealer groups that have gone, locally we lost Sidlow, mainly VW, Audi, Seat and Alpha as well as Barkers Citroen and another VW Audi dealer, Dane. This has been bad news for those who paid deposits and initial rentals to these companies, Read more »

The Real Effect Of The Changes To Fuel Duty & VAT

Monday, 3. November 2008

Did the measures announced by the Chancellor of the 24th November have any affect on drivers or the industry? Not much is the answer. The VAT drop on fuel has been balanced out by increased duty but will the duty come off again when VAT returns to it’s current level? It will also have the affect of putting up prices Read more »

Some Motoring Tips To Prepare You For Winter

Friday, 31. October 2008

It is that time of year when safety organisations remind drivers to carry out safety checks to ensure that you don’t find yourself with a broken car or skidding out of control on icy roads. Make sure that you check your tyres and pressures and your brakes. You can have your battery condition checked for free at most battery fitters, better to replace before you get into the car on a frosty morning and find the battery dead. Check the Read more »

New Car Scam To Beware Of

Thursday, 30. October 2008

Manufacturers were going a bit crazy last week as they warned contract hire companies and brokers from selling on hugely discounted new cars. As though this was earth shatteringly new! It isn’t, how do you think the car supermarkets have been able to sell new cars more cheaply than main dealers can buy them for? The practice of daily rental companies selling on brand new cars to Read more »

Employees Move Back To Company Cars

Wednesday, 29. October 2008

Finally it would seem that fewer people are using private cars for business since the Government chose not to adjust the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) in line with increasing running costs especially the increase in fuel costs. The rates are still set at 40 pence per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25 pence per mile thereafter, tax and NI free. This rate was set six years ago Read more »

Important Information On Tax Changes That Affect Car Finance

Monday, 20. October 2008

I mentioned the tax changes that will take place in April 2009 relating to company cars. However, some people are confused over the affects on leased cars whilst others still have concerns over their capital allowances after the changes have taken place. It would of course be wise to seek the advice of your accountant but in order to shed some light on a confusing situation – I hope this helps. First of all one thing will not change and that is the position with regard to ‘Low CO2 Emission Cars’. Whilst the threshold Read more »

Is White The New Black For Cars?

Tuesday, 14. October 2008

Well having reported a few weeks ago that white cars have been making a comeback it would seem that used car buyers are not quite so keen according to Eutotax-Glass’s who report that some supercars and luxury grand tourers can lose as much as £5,000 compared to a popular metallic colour. Whereas some high performance and those fitted with sports kits do very well. To demonstrate the quirkiness of the market Read more »

Are Super Fuels Simply A Waste Of Money?

Monday, 13. October 2008

After a damning report produced by Which magazine saying that the ‘super fuels’ did not save money, improve the car’s performance or improve the environment any more than standard fuels. BP stood by its claims of the benefits of it’s Ultimate fuels. It also criticised the fact that Which used only 3 mainstream models, a Ford Focus, Renault Megane and VW Golf. They said ‘It simply isn’t possible to obtain reliable comparison of the fuels based on Read more »

Car Care On A Budget – Great Tips

Sunday, 12. October 2008

Avis Valet Services have been giving out some great tips for motorists looking to take better care of their car without spending a fortune. The suggest the following:

  • Mayonnaise can be good at removing road tar stuck to tyres and paintwork.
  • Try using cooking oil on tyres and paintwork to remove black marks left by stubborn brake dust on wheel arches. It’s also great for removing bird droppings or splattered bugs on your windscreen.
  • Baking soda is excellent for lifting any kind of stain or mark, just dab the interior and leave for 20 mins before rinsing off. Leaves a fresh smell as well.
  • Use white vinegar on windscreens for crystal clear visibility as vinegar stops dust and smells collecting on the glass.
  • Wrap an ice cube in a cloth or pop some in a freezer bag and hold over chewing gum stuck to car seats or carpet. The gum will eventually snap off leaving no sticky residue.
  • Linseed oil – this can be used to clean leather upholstery in you car as it cleans and softens at the same time.
  • Sticky tape – use this to remove any hidden dust particles from seat fabric. The tape lifts the dust whereas a brush would simply push it in deeper.

So there you have it some interesting advice from Avis so blame them and not me if anything goes wrong. By Graham Hill
