Warnings have come out again from the AA who have reported a 6% increase in callouts for miss-fuelling during the first 6 months of 2010. It all seemed to have settled down last year as filling stations made sure that pumps were more clearly marked and manufacturers made it more obvious as to what fuel needed to be pumped into the tank. But for no apparent reason we have suddenly had this increase. The AA Read more »

Catalytic exhaust

There has been a big upsurge in thefts of cats. No, not fluffy pussies, this isn’t the RSPCA newsletter you know! No I’m talking about theft of catalytic converters. The police have criticised the manufacturers for not doing more to protect the owners of cars by designing cars that help to prevent these thefts. Detective Sergeant Mark Tidy of the Association Of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service Read more »

Graham Hill Guide To Deciding On A New Car

Wednesday, 7. July 2010

One of the things that continues to amaze me is the lack of attention that some people pay to the new car they are about to order. Some of this is actually caused by me and my colleagues by occasionally coming up with a deal that you can’t refuse, making the decision a bit of a no brainer but it is still a good idea to get a test drive of a car that you are likely to order. It is also important to check for certain items that for Read more »

The Strange Case Of The Missing Manhole Covers!

Monday, 5. July 2010

A rather strange type of crime has emerged around the country putting drivers lives at risk – the stealing of manhole covers. The thefts have left gaping holes in the roads and local authorities with big bills to pay. The covers cost up to £400 to replace. Surry County Council has had 536 stolen costing £160,000 to replace. This has hurt councils even more as hundreds of millions of pounds have already been slashed from Read more »

Fascinating Breakdown Of Your Insurance Premium

Saturday, 3. July 2010

I saw recently in Auto Express a report on the way insurance premiums are spent on claims. Whilst I talk regularly about insurance, and how to reduce premiums etc., I thought it made interesting reading and felt I should share it with you. The average premium has risen from £354 annually 15 years ago to £616 annually, even worse if you have loyally stuck with the same insurer which they suggest would now have Read more »

Irresponsible Van Drivers

Sunday, 27. June 2010

A survey by Fuelcard Company found that 21% of 2,000 commercial vehicle drivers leave their engines running while making deliveries leaving themselves open to vehicle theft. I would suggest that they may need to check their insurance policies to see if the drivers void their policies by being irresponsible. Not least of which there is a substantial amount of fuel being used unnecessarily. By Graham Hill

Few Claims For Pothole Damage Have Been Paid Out

Wednesday, 23. June 2010

As I’ve reported on several occasions following the particularly bad winter the roads of Britain are covered in potholes. Our local authority was quick to act and I’m pleased to say that the roads of West Sussex appear to be in pretty good order now which has probably avoided a lot of claims for damaged vehicles. Which is just as well because it seems that getting a payout, as a result of pothole damage, isn’t easy Read more »

New Wider Cars Are More Dangerous

Friday, 18. June 2010

Cars are getting wider and the question is being asked why? Are the manufacturers on a mission to increase replacement door mirrors after they are pretty much smashed to pieces after being clipped by an oncoming car, in ever tighter roads carrying bus lanes and cycle lanes? It certainly seems that way. Or is there another reason? No one seems to know, it is either a bit of subterfuge as I’ve suggested or are they all Read more »

How To Have A Really Bad Day

Image via Wikipedia

If you think you are having a bad day at work, consider the young mechanic working in a garage in New Malden. He had a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti in for an MOT after which he took it out for a road test. This lad in his early 20’s crashed the car into a lamp-post, flew over a 2 foot wall and landed in the middle of a roundabout. Severely shocked but otherwise unhurt the lad was heard to utter that his bosses would kill him. The value of the car? £218,000! Have a nice day. By Graham Hill
