UK Roads Safest For Over 80 Years

Thursday, 14. January 2010

Britain’s roads are now the safest since 1926 with road deaths running at 2,500. In many ways this has confirmed that the Government’s Road Safety Policy has worked although some would say that public demand and safety developments carried out by vehicle manufacturers have been the biggest contributors to improved road safety. All three major political parties are now taking a careful look at how this position can be further improved upon, especially as the current 10 year initiative ends in April this year. With an election following shortly after all three parties will have to come up with a plan that will be brought into effect after the election. The main concern of all three parties is that of the proportionately high number of deaths that occurs amongst those that drive on company business, nearly a third. So it would seem that initiatives will be brought in to encourage companies to introduce driver training in addition to promoting advanced motoring skills for all motorists. Clearly whilst it is great news that fatalities and injuries are decreasing we shouldn’t become complacent. By Graham Hill
