Trials Start On Road Junctions With No Right Of Way

Think about this? A crossroads with no right of way! This could be the future, no more irritating traffic lights or mini roundabouts to contend with just common courtesy will keep the traffic flowing around our towns and city centres. This idea has been imported from the States where they have traffic jams to beat all traffic jams but believe this to be the answer, where every road entering a junction has give way signs and road markings. Think it’s a daft idea? Well think again as it is already working in Balham, South London. Considered to be polite confusion it’s apparently working. The traffic drives more cautiously with fewer delays. The new junction at the top of Tooting Common has give way signs on every road. It was the idea of Lambeth Council’s Cycling Manager, Richard Ambler who ordered that the mini roundabout be replaced, after accidents as a result of drivers driving straight across the mini roundabout. I suppose a bigger hump in the middle of the roundabout wouldn’t have solved the problem? Obviously not then. But very strangely it seems to work, drivers are much more cautious and there is less congestion so the ‘no right of way’ junction may be coming to roads near you very shortly. Good idea or bad idea – what do you think? By Graham Hill
