Too Old To Drive?

Tuesday, 20. July 2010

It was a sad day when my namesake, Graham Hill, the racing driver, lost his life in an air crash. Not only did we lose one of the greatest ambassadors for motor racing this country has ever had we also lost the only ever winner of ‘The Treble’, the F1 world championship – twice, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. He was also a great personality, even appearing on the Morcombe and Wise show. But without him we’re left with the opinionated and outdated views of  Sterling Moss who never won a world championship but continually rates above Graham Hill in the list of all time greats – how does that happen? He’s now demanding regular tests for drivers over 70 following an RAC report on motoring. The study showed that four out of five over 70’s have been driving for more than 30 years with nearly one in two holding a licence for over half a century. Whilst I don’t totally disagree with Stirling we need to consider all the statistics if we are to start forcing older drivers to be assessed when you consider that by far the most dangerous drivers are aged between 17 and 25, shouldn’t younger drivers be assessed every year up to their 25th birthday? Let me have your views? By Graham Hill
