The Benefits Of Inflating Tyres With Nitrogen
Thursday, 26. June 2008
This week’s unusual fact is that you can inflate tyres with nitrogen instead of traditional compressed air. Tristar Worldwide Chauffeur Services does exactly this with it’s fleet of 630 chauffeur cars. They have done this because of the inert properties of nitrogen and its resistance to expansion or contraction as tyre temperatures fluctuate making it safer than air. According to police statistics 86% of car crashes and major incidents, tyre pressure has been found to be a contributing factor. The company is predicting a 5% cost saving on fuel and tyre life in addition to the safety and environmental benefits. On the other hand I am thinking hydrogen may be a better solution as it would have the effect of making the car lighter, even less fuel use and tyre wear but then Saturday nights would be a disaster with the drunken nutters bending over to grab a slurp of hydrogen out of the nearest Ford Transit tyre and wandering around talking like bloody Donald Duck for the rest of the evening. Nah forget that idea as funny as it might be at the time it would get on my nerves!

This is a very interesting bit of information, because I’ve always read that the difference in gas mileage can’t be measured between oxygen and nitrogen filled tires.
This is definitely something I must research further. Thank you for the info!
