Electric vehicles are too quiet! I mentioned this in one of my very early articles about the introduction of electric vehicles. With no engine, only a fairly quiet motor, electric vehicles could pose a danger to pedestrians and cyclists. Modec, manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles has said that of all the vehicles built over the past 3 years, only one customer, Royal Mail, has asked for noise awareness equipment to be fitted. They say this is because the vans are being used in large hangers so Read more »

Andrew Sentance may not be a name that you have come across before but he is very important in our lives. He sits on the Monetary Policy Committee in the Bank of England. They sit each month and decide whether base rate should stay the same, at 0.5% or increase. Since the rate dropped to 0.5% every member of the committee has voted to keep it at the same level, that is until the October meeting at which Mr Read more »

Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond revealed in a speech that 84% of all journeys made in the UK were made by car. This means that there is little prospect that we will move away from cars and onto public transport in the near future. However, the Campaign for Better Transport has carried out a survey, in which they found that certain towns and cities were more dependent on cars than others. The worst offenders and those most car-dependent were: Read more »

The AA has revealed that we are seeing a North South divide open up when it comes to fuel. Apparently prices are rising faster in the south than in the north. Recent drops in oil prices should have resulted in pump prices dropping but the garages in the south seem reluctant to pass on the savings. The average price of a litre of petrol in the north is now 115.5 pence but in the south it’s 117.2 pence. The gap has opened Read more »

Aren’t statistics fantastic? It would seem that statistics show that children brought up in wealthy neighbourhoods are less likely to die or get badly injured on UK roads. The statistics, prepared by Road Safety Analysis, compared accidents linking 0 – 15 year olds to the victims’ postcodes. The UK’s most dangerous area is Preston, Lancs. Here, children are twice as likely to be killed or injured than the National average or five times more likely than the safest area, Kensington and Chelsea in Read more »

Unexpected Centres Of Congestion In UK

Saturday, 4. September 2010

If I was asked where would you least like to be in the UK, behind the wheel of your car at rush hour, my immediate answer would be in the centre of London. As I’m sure would be the answer given by most of my readers. But this isn’t the worst place to be, in fact according to Government figures it’s one of the best places to be, the worst being the West Midlands with 4 out of 5 commuters making their twice daily commute behind the wheel of a car. The national average is 10% less at 70%. The next Read more »
