As you can imagine, in order to produce my weekly newsletter and my blog I carry out a lot of research. The information I receive comes from a number of sources leaving me to decide on the accuracy before I report it. Most of the time I feel quite happy with the information that I have and when I recently reported on the rip off price of diesel in Read more »

Fuel Overtakes Depreciation As The No1 Running Cost

Monday, 25. April 2011

It would seem that we are getting very close to the time when, by far the biggest running cost, when it comes to cars, i.e. depreciation, is overtaken by the cost of fuel. CFC Solutions have made this claim looking at the way fuel prices are increasing compared to the cost of depreciation for the average 2.0litre upper medium petrol company car. It was in Read more »

New Eye Test Laws For Drivers

Sunday, 24. April 2011

The EU are about to do it to us again, impose a new law on us concerning eye tests. The impending legislation will require van drivers to have their eyes tested every 5 years and private motorists to be tested every 10-15 years. In the past there has been no law governing eye tests although most responsible employers offered them to their employees Read more »

Is The Government Set To Hold Back Fuel Duty Hike?

Tuesday, 1. March 2011

As fuel prices continue to rise the Government is under continual pressure to shelve the fuel duty hike. In April the duty will rise from its current 59pence per litre by inflation plus 1p, estimated at 3 to 4 pence per litre. Diesel is already at an all time high and still rising without the duty hike, causing the AA, RAC, Auto Express, RMIF and others to call on the Government to put the brakes on. The RAC pointed out that there have been 8 tax rises applied to petrol over the last 2 years making the Read more »

New Warnings That Fuel Prices Are Set To Rise Sharply

Friday, 8. October 2010

Warnings have been issued about the likely increase in the cost of fuel at the pumps. Of course we have the increase in VAT in January but the warning has come as a result of French firm Total putting their 500 service stations up for sale along with its supply contract to a further 300 independent outlets. At the same time Murco have also put their network of 200 retail outlets up for sale which means 10% of all the Read more »

The AA has revealed that we are seeing a North South divide open up when it comes to fuel. Apparently prices are rising faster in the south than in the north. Recent drops in oil prices should have resulted in pump prices dropping but the garages in the south seem reluctant to pass on the savings. The average price of a litre of petrol in the north is now 115.5 pence but in the south it’s 117.2 pence. The gap has opened Read more »

Fuel Prices Set To Soar This Summer

Monday, 3. May 2010

We have such short memories! I remember the furore when petrol prices hit 119.7pence per litre 2 years ago. Fuel suppliers were challenged and emails flew around in all directions telling everyone to boycott the main oil companies in an attempt to force petrol suppliers to drop their prices. At the time oil prices were $147 per barrel but with exchange rates at about 2 dollars to the pound it put the price per barrel at Read more »

Fuel Prices Predicted To Rise

Sunday, 17. January 2010

RMI Petrol Retailers Association is predicting a rise in fuel of 10 pence per litre in 2010 as a result of the VAT increase and other tax increases that are already planned or likely to be introduced when a new Government is elected. Clearly using the green argument to beat drivers over the head and justify exceptional taxation increases will help them to recover the huge deficit brought about by investment Read more »

The Reasons Why Oil Prices Escalate

Thursday, 25. September 2008

Well just as we started to rejoice in the steady fall in oil prices and the price war that started last week between the oil companies and the supermarket chains we suddenly saw a massive increase in the price of  crude oil of $25 a barrel on Monday. Now whilst there was an element of manipulation on the markets protecting traders on the futures market from over exposure it has still sent jitters throughout the car industry and concerned drivers (who heard about the rise). Strangely, this massive increase in Read more »
