As a consultant I have often advised companies on their car policies and driver handbooks. With more stringent health and safety laws it is important that even with just one or two employees that drive on company business you have a driver handbook or incorporate certain items within the employee’s contract of employment. I have been asked on many occasions about salary sacrifice schemes, whether they are available to small companies and if brokers such as I can provide them. The answer has been no and unfortunately, due to the high set up costs, look to remain so. I was at a meeting yesterday at Buckingham University at which one of the UK’s leading providers of Read more »

It would seem that we are getting very close to the time when, by far the biggest running cost, when it comes to cars, i.e. depreciation, is overtaken by the cost of fuel. It has been estimated that there are in excess of 1 million businesses in the UK considered to be running ‘small fleets’ of company vehicles (25 or less). It would seem that the vast majority of these businesses don’t see themselves as running a ‘fleet’ of vehicles but they should be aware that the same rules and regulations regarding duty of care, health and safety and the Corporate Manslaughter Act along with Read more »

Even in these enlightened times and a greater awareness of employer responsibilities when it comes to health and safety at work relating to those who drive a car on business, a recent survey revealed that a third of drivers opt for the cash alternative to a company car. This is so dangerous as drivers who need as much money as they can save to simply pay their household bills, Read more »
