New Motorway Services Contracts Won By Egon Ronay Award Winners
Tuesday, 31. August 2010
The reputation of motorway services has never been too good, that was until M&S and Waitrose were introduced and food quality was seen to improve. But leading the way was Westmorland who actually won awards for its Tebay site in Cumbria. It was the first service station to source its produce locally for its shops and café (70%) and its green picnic area. The services even won awards from Egon Ronay. It has now won the contract for a second premises in Gloucestershire on the M5. The new services will open between junctions 11a and 12 in 2013. This service area was the second of two approved by the government in 2008. The other is on the M25 near Cobham in Surrey which is running behind. The main motorway service players are still Moto with 42 sites and Welcome Break with 26 sites. Is this the way that motorway services should go? By Graham Hill
