New At Work Parking Levy To Be Trialed

Friday, 28. November 2008

Do you live and work in Nottingham? If you do you will no doubt be delighted that they will soon be introducing an at work parking levy on any companies that have more than 10 parking spaces. The proposed scheme puts them at odds with London, Manchester and Cambridge who favour congestion charges as a much fairer way of charging. According to Nottingham City Council congestion costs £160 million per annum caused by people driving to and from work. They propose to introduce a workplace parking levy in 2010 following approval from the secretary of state for transport. The charges will be levied upon employers rather than employees and will only apply to companies with over 10 parking spaces. Could this be the thin end of the wedge for other towns and cities to do the same or will this encourage companies to build blocks of flats on their parking lot and force their employees to park on the street? Watch this space. By Graham Hill
