Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd in Sunderlan...

Who is the biggest UK car manufacturer? Nope not Vauxhall or Ford, it’s Nissan! Yep, their Sunderland plant has broken all production records in the UK and produced over 400,000 cars in 2010. Considering the current economic climate that is absolutely amazing but, in my opinion, not surprising. We have seen some aggressive marketing of the Juke and Qashqai but better still whilst other manufacturers have been standing in the corner of the roll with their fingers in their waxy ears humming lalalala, Nissan have been getting on with the job and getting their price points spot on.

Whilst other manufacturers have shied away from discounts and bonuses in order to provide some keen lease rates Nissan have jumped in and sold cars by the transporter load. Let’s face it they are niche producers, they have a few small traditional type cars with the Pixo, Micra and Note but where is the Astra sized small family car?

Or a Mondeo sized large family car? They don’t have such animals but they have managed to break all UK production records by manufacturing 423,000 cars last year.

Excellent work, Sunderland City Council are rightly proud of the company and its employees. In the meantime Nissan are looking to recruit more engineers and recruitment staff as the production of the new Nissan Leaf electric car comes to Sunderland also.

As Professor Garel Rhys saidabout Nissan ‘Its performance during the recession has lessons for all car manufacturers.’ And so say all of us – well done Nissan! By Graham Hill
