Calls have been made for more information regarding driving abroad to be more easily available. As I have reported previously countries have different rules regarding insurance, breakdown cover, warning triangles, emergency fluorescent jackets, replacement light bulbs and first aid kits. But there are other rules regarding drink driving, speeding and parking that could result in some very heavy fines and even points on your driving licence transferred to the UK. The latest ‘oversight’ has been that of tyres. Travellers in Austria found that it is illegal to drive cars between November 1^st and April 15^th without winter tyres marked M&S and with a minimum tread depth of 4mm compared with our legal limit of 1.6mm. If you don’t have the legal tyres fitted you can be fined between 35 Euros and 5,000 Euros. The AA and the RAC can help but if you are travelling abroad a bit of research is required. By Graham Hill
