Well, I guess the big news of the week, and one I was waiting to break before sending out my deal of the week and updated blog, is the launch of Tesco Cars www.tescocars.com. I have been working as a consultant with Carsite, whose site has been updated to accommodate the new name and Tesco loans. The same procedure is being adopted by the new website as happened under the old scheme with car photos, HPI and inspection reports. The difference now is the addition of 2,000 clubcard points with every car purchase. Whilst Tesco only has a minority stake in the originator of online used car sales, it is expected to have a large say in the way the company promotes itself as the company now uses the Tesco brand.

We are likely to see further developments as the company extends its associated product offerings. It already has a stake in online tyre sellers, Black Circle.

For those that fear the total collapse of the used car sector – forget it. Around 6 – 7 million used cars change hands annually at the moment, down from 8 million just a few years ago but whilst online sales is growing I would suggest that it won’t grow fast enough or big enough using this model to concern traditional sellers of used cars, auctions and car dealers. I of course cannot comment. But you can if you wish! By Graham Hill
