Dangerous Driving Kills Road Workers
Friday, 28. November 2008
Would you like to be a road worker? I know we all complain about the 3 miles of cones before we get to the 10’ stretch of central reservation being repaired by 4 road workers but frankly it’s not a job that I would like to do given the lunatic way that some motorists thrash down the reduced lanes of the motorway or A road. Unsurprisingly 10 road workers were killed and 81 were seriously injured between 2003 and 2007 so the Highways Agency have launched an awareness campaign making available two £80,000 hi-tech training vehicles to get the message out there. They have also created a short film and radio clips to help get the message across that driving too fast and too close to road works can cause injury or even death. In a survey carried out amongst road workers 89% felt that accidents at road works were caused by excessive speed, 76% to lost concentration and 73% down to drivers not reading signs. By Graham Hill
