Check Your Warranty – Items Of Cover Drop Off After 12 Months.

Tuesday, 25. January 2011

With new car deliveries stretching out all the time and 4 month delivery becoming the norm rather than the exception, many are tempted to go the used car route, often paying over the odds for a car less than 12 months old simply to get a fairly new car. I’ve mentioned the dangers in the past but with so many people being forced to take a used car because their current leased car cannot be extended, it’s worth mentioning the dangers again. I explained that servicing costs increase with age but those that have always changed their cars for new cars do not always understand the dangers attached to warranties. Most cars only come with a genuine manufacturers warranty lasting for 12 months. When a car is supplied with 3 years ‘manufacturer’s’ warranty it normally means that years 2 and 3 are provided by the supplying dealer. It also means that certain items fall off the cover list as the car gets older. So when you buy a used car you should know that even if the car has got a manufacturers warranty or you buy an aftermarket warranty there are a number of expensive items that aren’t covered. You should make sure that you check the warranty before buying the car and check to see what exclusions are shown. By Graham Hill
