Think about this? A crossroads with no right of way! This could be the future, no more irritating traffic lights or mini roundabouts to contend with just common courtesy will keep the traffic flowing around our towns and city centres. This idea has been imported from the States where they have traffic jams to beat all traffic jams but believe this to be the answer, where every road entering a junction has give way signs Read more »

We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. And man’s best friend is a dog (don’t even go there). But apparently after my report last week that a number of drivers would give up sex rather than their cars (mind you the research was carried out in Canada) we now have research showing that drivers regard their cars as their best friend. I kid you not. It was announced on BBC’s Radio 4 – so it must be true! So Read more »

One of the things that continues to amaze me is the lack of attention that some people pay to the new car they are about to order. Some of this is actually caused by me and my colleagues by occasionally coming up with a deal that you can’t refuse, making the decision a bit of a no brainer but it is still a good idea to get a test drive of a car that you are likely to order. It is also important to check for certain items that for Read more »

I have warned before about the unhealthy state of steering wheels. Often when people clean their cars they completely forget the steering wheel, considered to hold more germs than a toilet but a new report from the Government’s Health Protection Agency suggests that there is much more to worry about. They have found that legionella, the microbe that causes lethal Legionaire’s disease, breeds in stagnant and Read more »

A rather strange type of crime has emerged around the country putting drivers lives at risk – the stealing of manhole covers. The thefts have left gaping holes in the roads and local authorities with big bills to pay. The covers cost up to ÂŁ400 to replace. Surry County Council has had 536 stolen costing ÂŁ160,000 to replace. This has hurt councils even more as hundreds of millions of pounds have already been slashed from Read more »

I saw recently in Auto Express a report on the way insurance premiums are spent on claims. Whilst I talk regularly about insurance, and how to reduce premiums etc., I thought it made interesting reading and felt I should share it with you. The average premium has risen from ÂŁ354 annually 15 years ago to ÂŁ616 annually, even worse if you have loyally stuck with the same insurer which they suggest would now have Read more »

A survey by Fuelcard Company found that 21% of 2,000 commercial vehicle drivers leave their engines running while making deliveries leaving themselves open to vehicle theft. I would suggest that they may need to check their insurance policies to see if the drivers void their policies by being irresponsible. Not least of which there is a substantial amount of fuel being used unnecessarily. By Graham Hill

If you’re looking for a safe car then look no further than the new 5 Series BMW which has just received the highest score ever by EuroNCAP for all round safety making it the safest car in the world. Helped by the very high score achieved when assessed for safety protection provided to driver, passengers and pedestrians, new active safety equipment became the clincher. A Trading Standard team based in Birmingham have found that an incredible 90% of used tyres being sold by independent tyre dealers and fitted on cars don’t meet minimum legal standards. Among the tyres inspected officers found some with nails embedded in them as well as one tyre that was 17 years old. The investigation, run by the city council and overseen by Trading Standards boss, Chris Neville was a Read more »

As I’ve reported on several occasions following the particularly bad winter the roads of Britain are covered in potholes. Our local authority was quick to act and I’m pleased to say that the roads of West Sussex appear to be in pretty good order now which has probably avoided a lot of claims for damaged vehicles. Which is just as well because it seems that getting a payout, as a result of pothole damage, isn’t easy Read more »
