If you have a fairly recent BMW you will need to keep an eye out for low flying birds using your car as a toilet! There has been a lot of publicity recently about lime damage caused to BMW paintwork because of lime in the pooh, according to BMW. They go on to say that they will not pay for any re-sprays as a result of damage caused by bird’s mess as the damage is caused ‘as a result of outside influence’. Not good news to one driver, reported in Auto Express, whose car was left scarred by bird droppings after just 5 days of being parked outside his home. It now turns out that many complaints have been made with BMW pooh pooh’ing them all.(oh dear). According to experts some paint is now very ‘soft’ having replaced the tougher lead based paint with water based paint. The question is why aren’t BMW applying a strong protective coat to their paint if this is a problem? Mercedes apply a clear ceramic coat to all their new cars. As Roy West, the driver reported in Auto Express, pointed out if the cars are unable to resist the effects of bird droppings, something that has been happening for years, are the care=s really considered fit for purpose? In the meantime, whilst BMW look for a solution experts say that if you see bird droppings on your car wipe it off and wash immediately to avoid staining. Let me know if you have experienced problems and if this type of damage should be covered by the paint warranty? By Graham Hill
