A Toyota Car Doesn’t Hold The Record For The Largest Number Of Recalls In 2010

Which car had the biggest recall of the year? Toyota? Did you say Toyota? Then you are wrong! Amazingly, thanks to the press and other media you would easily believe that a Toyota car had the biggest recall in the UK following the problems they had with stuck accelerators. But it turns out that it was another Japanese car, a Honda Jazz which had 171,372 cars recalled as a result of a leak that could cause a fire in the electric window switch. Renault recalled 66735 Scenics as a result of an electric parking brake problem. In total Toyota have had 176,861 cars recalled but these include Aygo, RAV4, Avensis and Yaris models. However, Toyota are still insisting that the problem was either driver error or miss-fitting carpet mats. After official investigations carried out in the US 35 of the 58 cases found that the accelerator pedal had not been touched. In-car black boxes revealed that in another 9 the brake pedal was hit at the last minute. Analysts suggest that this was as a result of drivers hitting the accelerator by mistake. So was it an electronics fault as was claimed at the time or not as Toyota have claimed all along? Have you had a problem, please let us know? By Graham Hill
