Nottingham City Council Gets Approval Fo Workplace Partking Levy

It looks as though local councils are now to launch the publicised workplace parking levy. First to make the move is Nottingham City Council, much to the annoyance of one of their biggest employers, Boots, who have 3,000 affected parking places that will incur an annual charge of £253 per car rising to £350 per car after 2 years. The rule, approved by the government to start from 2012, is likely to be rolled out by several local authorities at a time when businesses are suffering and struggling to keep employees in work. Several bodies are challenging the decision to introduce these charges including the Chamber of Commerce, the ACFO and the Conservative party. It has been suggested that it will cause any companies with large numbers of staff to relocate. I don’t understand the logic other than simply to raise cash. An alternative would be to close the car parks and force staff to park in the already congested streets, how sensible is that? By Graham Hill
