20mph Limits To Be Introduced Nationwide
Friday, 29. July 2011
20mph speed limits could be coming to a road near you as the government announces new rules that make it easier for councils to impose them, even though a survey carried out by the RAC revealed that 13 million of the 34 million drivers ignored 20mph speed limits. Currently the councils are obliged to use speed humps and signposts to control speed around sensitive areas but the new rules allow for councils to simply paint the speed limits on the road along with the use of signs.
This will reduce the costs considerably but the impact on motorists is yet to be seen. The blanket city centre limit of 20mph introduced into Portsmouth hasn’t worked so will it work better on a road by road basis?
I think drivers should remember that when a limit of 20mph has been applied to a stretch of road in his town it is because the road is sensitive and is there for a reason. Time will tell. Do you have any views? By Graham Hill
